Tuning In: Cambridge 105

Monday 11th March 2013 | Patrick

Cambridge’s community radio station Cambridge 105 has quickly established itself as a leading local radio station since its launch in 2010. The station is run by volunteers who offer a full and diverse range of programmes.

Presenters including Matt Webb, Neil Whiteside, Lottie Booth and station manager Tim Willett provide regular daytime programming with a mix of music, chat and local news. The schedule really comes alive in the evenings when music from across the spectrum can be heard: World; Rock, Heavy Rock and Metal; Folk; Electronic; Urban and more. Shows including Headstand, Multiply and Dave’s Smelly Flower Pot take a bit of everything and throw it together in a melting pot oozing great sounds across the airwaves whilst Gregg Butler and Kipper The Cat shun the studio’s brand new CD players and digital play out system for 78rpm gramophone records. Every section of the Cambridge community is represented including shows in Polish and Italian.

As a community station, Cambridge 105 prides itself on having more local news and programming than any other station in the city. The Unsigned Chart features local bands voted for by listeners and The New Music Generator showcases local bands on air and at gig nights. The station regularly broadcasts live from events around the city including the Cambridge Band Competition and free summer festival Strawberry Fair. Whether you live in Cambridge or not you’re bound to hear music and features you won’t find anywhere else!

This is all done by volunteers while the station relies on local advertisers and membership fees to keep running. Anyone in Cambridge who is interested in radio can become a member and get experience and training in all aspects of radio broadcasting. You can listen to Cambridge 105 online and their website also features podcasts of many shows.
