The Courteeners: Morrissey approved indie

Indie | Tuesday 19th February 2013 | Varala

Morrissey loves this band and we do too!

Formed by four Manchester boys who had known each other since they were ten-years-old, The Courteeners have spent the past seven years making great indie music. It all started with lead vocalist Liam Fray, who dropped out of his Creative Writing course at University of Salford to start the group. After all the positive feedback from his solo acoustic sets, Fray opted to recruit his friend from next door, Michael Campbell to play drums. Later on, bassist Mark Cuppello and guitarist Daniel Moores joined the band, and so far, they’ve put out three studio albums.

Along the way, they’ve famously received the Morrissey seal of approval. The Smiths singer has praised The Courteeners multiple times, telling American radio station KRWC: “Every song was very strong and full of hooks and full of dynamics”. The fellow Mancunian elaborates: “It’s different with The Courteeners, they actually do have very good, strong songs.”

Here’s a slice from the new album Anna:
