Saigon's long awaited album "The Greatest Story Never Told 2: Bread and Circuses" was released this month to much critical acclaim. Those familiar with Saigon's music know his lyrics are as real as they come, but for this album they are decidedly - dare I say it - realer.
For those of us who saw Saigon's video message he taped in his hotel room in Germany in the month of August, we were already expecting a more conscious step from him on this album. And we welcomed it. Today's hip-hop has moved away from the purpose it was created for and now serves as a medium for us to make caricatures of ourselves. Saigon's new album is a positive step in the other direction and as true hip-hop fans we welcome this.
A track off of the album entitled, "Blown Away" is an anti-establishment anthem, paying homage to assassinated great leaders like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., John F Kennedy and Huey Newton. The lyrics are powerful and the music video to go with it serves just as powerful a visualisation. Lyrics like "Martin Luther King had more than a dream/ He was out for social change and that sort of a thing/ Tried to lead us to freedom but before it would ring/He got blown awayyyyyyy", punctuate the beats punchy baseline and show Saigon's deeper thought, a rallying cry for the audience to wake up and think.
This project includes the talents of Marsha Ambrosius, Killer Mike, Dead Prez, Chamillionare, Styles P, Andreena Mill, DJ Corbett, G Martin, and Sai's three year old daughter Rayne and is produced by the likes of Just Blaze, Shuko, DJ Corbett, Clev Trev and Rich Kid.
Saigon also enlists hip hop kingpin Styles P on the joint "Not Like Them" ; a kick-flip hip-hop beat with Sai and P rough-riding the track with their vocals.
Saigon's album was well worth the wait and is well-worth the listen.
