Filipino prisoners really do blame it on the boogie

Wednesday 3rd October 2012 | Rebecca

We laugh when dogs do the silliest things, when cats play keyboards and when monkeys sniff their fingers. But what about when murderers dance? It seems you can fight the law but even rhythm is going to get you.

Back in 2007, a Filipino prison produced the internet hit remake of Michael Jackson’s thriller dance and the world went crazy for it. Now the same prison has produced PSY's Gangnam Style as their latest viral hit. Comical as it is to watch that many people make absolute fools of themselves, we really must ask how funny it is to see some of the worst criminals dancing for entertainment.  If they were all still alive, would we perhaps see the Third Reich on ice or Stalin come dancing ?

Entertaining and undoubtedly talented as these inmates are, is this really punishment?  Yes, the thought of listening to that song over and over might in fact drive one to murder (again) but surely learning a dance is hardly punishment, unless of course, you have two left feet, or none at all.  What punishment will we see next, releasing Bruce Forsyth on inmates? Who would be his favourite?

Something tells me that in England we would never see the Cray twins doing the mambo or Sutcliffe the hokey-cokey, so we can feel safe laughing in the knowledge that this deluded sense of entertainment and justice is happening elsewhere in the world.

A little more entertaining but far more injustice than watching Hugh Heffner’s man-hood shrivel like an old toe in the bath surrounded by his bunnies, here are the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center’s prisoners, with their take on PSY’s Gangman Style.
