Black Sun Empire emerge From The Shadows

Monday 1st October 2012 | David

The Dutch trio are onto their fifth LP, with plenty of collaborations to get excited about.

Having exploded onto the drum & bass scene in the early 90s, the Utrecht-based group have a new LP out, entitled From The Shadows. They’ve experimented with new ideas following some intense touring, but this latest release is pure d&b, moving away from the dubstep sounds heard on previous records. They joked that “no one likes is [dubstep] anymore, haven’t you heard?” but went on to say that they just felt like making d&b this time around, and what a result. The songs are heavy on the bass and there are some pretty awesome drops mixed in there for good measure.

Speaking about the process behind the album, the band stated that the change was aided by their move to new a recording location, an old warehouse “filled with bands and other electronic artists”. Having other musicians around to work with, as well as other recording groups to take inspiration from, has resulted in a deep d&b record with some killer individual tracks. Their bi-monthly event, Blackout, has allowed them to collaborate with numerous artists, such as Youthstar and Foreign Beggars, who started out as guests in Black Sun Empire’s shows in places including Utrecht, Berlin and Amsterdam. Ultimately, these events have led to some sick tracks being laid down – check out ‘Dawn of a Dark Day’, featuring Foreign Beggars, below for an example.

Black Sun Empire is currently touring Europe and New Zealand, landing at Lakota in Bristol on 17th November.
