Lucy Rose at Oxjam Dalston

Indie | Thursday 27th September 2012 | Osh

Outside the small Oxfam store in Dalston anticipation and the queue are gradually escalating at the prospect of tonight’s musical entertainment.

The inspirational partnership of the charity and British musicians continued for the third night in a row with a headline act from the immensely talented up and coming singer-songwriter Lucy Rose, support was provided by female vocalist Kyla La Grange who opened the night’s proceedings with a number of powerful and heartfelt ballads.

Despite the wonderful opening the tale of the night belongs to only the headliner Lucy Rose. Performing from her recently released album ‘Like I Used To’ Rose had the crowd captivated from the off, totally at ease with the intimate proximity of the crowd which to some artists would be intimidating , Rose appeared to revel in it, joking with the crowd instantaneously won over by not only her terrific melodies but by her charming persona.

Highlights from the set included the first single to be taken from the album the massive ‘Bikes’ and a beautifully touching rendition of what is a sure fire classic ‘Shiver’. Rose offers not just your usual melancholic and emotion filled acoustic numbers but maintains the uncanny ability to transition a song from a soft, touching lullaby into an upbeat floor filler which dares a crowd who had previously been encapsulated in emotion not to dance.

Rose has long been synonymous with Bombay Bicycle Club hidden within the depths of their musical talent but after last night’s performance I wonder how long it will be before she eclipses even them.
