Last night’s 64th Primetime Emmy Awards saw big wins for British actors Damian Lewis and Dame Maggie Smith.
The Emmy’s are often referred to as The Oscars for television, but being an American awards show it’s always nice to see British actors being acknowledged for their contributions over the last year. Damian Lewis won the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Nicholas Brody in the hit show Homeland. Lewis plays an American soldier that has finally returned home after years of being held as a prisoner in Iraq and is suspected of having been turned into an al-Qaeda agent. Upon collecting his award the Homeland star joked: “I’m one of those pesky Brits, I apologise. I don’t really believe in judging art, but thought I’d show up just in case.”
Dame Maggie Smith walked away with the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, as The Dowager Countess of Grantham/Violet Crawley, in Julian Fellow’s Downton Abbey. This turn out to be the only win of the night for Downton, despite being nominated for sixteen awards, which is the most a British Drama has ever received at the Emmys.
Other Brits being acknowledged included Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for their performances in the BBC’s Sherlock, but they were among those going home without the gold, similar to Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter and Brendon Coyle. And it wasn’t just the Brits that had some disappointment at last night’s ceremony, the American drama Mad Men didn’t receive a single award even though they had seventeen nominations across the board. But hey, a Brit won the coveted Best Actor award so we’re happy.
Homeland was a clear favourite of the night, having gripped audiences all over the world. The success of the show was reflected by the rest of the awards they managed to scoop up including, Outstanding Drama Series, Best Writing in a Drama Series and Best Actress in a Drama Series for Clair Danes. The much anticipated second season of Homeland will air on channel 4 Sunday 7th October, check out the trailer bellow:
