This hectic 23 year old artist can make songs about any topic and make them look cool! With blue hair and 'innocent boy' face he conquered You Tube, where he got 9 million views, with catchy melodies and funny lyrics that most of us can feel identified with. But coming out of an internet video platform is not easy, at least you must have these three qualities: originality, creativity and talent. That’s the only way to succeed nowadays without falling in the commercial standardized market and their blockbuster formulas.
We can clearly see that this guy knows what he is doing, not only for his piano studies and the fact that he started writing music since 17 years old, but because he managed to play the battery, the ukulele and the accordion showing a complete understanding of the whole process. For me, his creativity is shown not only in his music but in the way he achieves to get notoriety in a world in which we have the impression that everything has been seen before. His originality remains in the way he tell stories, the ones that we live every day, putting a mirror in front of the new generations and telling them “hey mate, look how ridiculous is what you’re obsessed about”. For example, in the song ‘Internet Love Song’, he says ‘Please don’t block me, please don’t go off line, I wanna be with you all the time’. But he is also a poet, which his song ‘The shore’ is a good example of. We can see Milsom reciting verses with electronic music behind him, also a good way to bring back this forgotten art.
This artist and writer based in London recorded his first self-released album ‘Awkward Ballads For The Easily Pleased’, in 2007, coinciding with the first home-made videos. Then came ‘Painfully Mainstream’, released on DFTBA Records in 2009, and in 2010, ‘Explorers 1’ showing his originality in the way he released this album, recording in one evening and making availible as a .zip file online, distributing exclusively through Twitter. It will lead to Amateur Lovemaking Monthly, which role up all Tom’s talents as is a collection of experimental writing, drawings and comics. His last release ‘Alien Home’ is now available online, and if you want to see him live in his entire creative wilderness, go to Barfly Camden the 24th October at 7.30pm.
