Have Muse tried to fix what isn’t broken?

The Devon rockers’ choice to flirt with electronica on their highly anticipated 6th album, The 2nd Law, has been met with decidedly mixed feelings.
Released tracks from Muse’s latest offering do retain in places the vaulting, orchestral sounds and guitar riffs of previous tracks – ‘Survival’, the song of the London 2012 Olympics, being a fine example – the move to include dubstep sounds in some songs has left a proportion of fans with stark reservations. ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’ sounds like a classic Muse offering until the dubstep powers through.
The trailer for the album, released in June, saw fans voicing their disapproval of the new sound through NME. Whilst not all listeners are put off, many remain firmly on the fence.
For a band touted as one of the best live acts of this generation, consistently winning awards to that end, it will be interesting to see how this affects their live performances. The dubstep overtones would seem to lend themselves well to massive headline performances, the likes of which the band is undoubtedly used to, but the question remains whether many of their droves of fans will be there to enjoy the shows.
The 2nd Law is set to be released worldwide on October 1st 2012, and in America on October 2nd.
