There appears to be a stirring in the folk/indie industry down-under these days, a stir caused by a certain Steve Smyth. This follicly endowed musical mastermind has very much so burst on the scene, and following the recent release of his first album Release has gone from strength to strength. After being introduced to Mr Smyth by a good friend of mine, it was the album release gig at The Slaughtered Lamb, London, that I was handed the opportunity to witness his genius.
Whereas a large majority of smaller artists that I have journeyed to see live perform in half packed or nigh empty studios, it was a pleasant surprise to encounter a packed underground studio at the well-known pub. Confronted with an electric atmosphere it was difficult not to enjoy the unusual style that this man presents. As the simple sound of guitar and drums resonated around the small arena, it was clear that the audience was enjoying this most individual performance. Myself included.
But aside from his appearance it is his personality and passion that makes this man a USP for the folk/rock industry. His friendly, kind-hearted nature makes him an easy man to talk to, a real treat as the man has many stories. Also the passion that he vocalises whilst reciting his songs to the audience is somewhat shocking at first, but allows his music to tell a whole new story.
The big story is that Steve Smyth needs to be checked out. His great tunes and amazing ability as a live performer is something not to be missed.
