If plans are approved the age limit that woman can receive IVF on the NHS will be raised from 39 to 42. Currently, woman that are unable to conceive naturally and are below the age of 39 are able to receive fertility treatment paid for by the NHS, newly proposed plans will see women up to the age of 42 also able to receive the treatment. Dr Leng, the chief executive of The National Institute for Health and Clinical Evidence says ‘The aim of these new and updated recommendations is to ensure that everyone that has problems with fertility has the best possible help available’. Same-sex couples are set to benefit if the new plans are to go ahead and also people that are wishing to preserve their fertility before undergoing treatment that may affect it. Couples that have been trying to have a baby for more than three years are currently eligible for free treatment but the new plans are set to bring this time down to two years. People that are infected with diseases such as Hepatitis B and HIV would benefit from the renewed guidelines as well as people that are unable to have intercourse. In 2010 more than 47,000 women benefited from fertility treatment. Hollie Dent
