Denmark Street’s Historic 12 Bar Club Faced with Closure

London’s famous 12 Bar Club is set for closure in January of next year. Announcing the news on its Facebook page earlier this week, the historic club has been given notice to vacate London’s Denmark St (AKA ‘Tin Pan Alley’) by the middle of January in order to make way for the multi-million pound Cross Rail development project. The development will affect the area as a whole, with many of Denmark Streets historic music stores facing the prospect of soaring rental costs and eviction also.
The small street has played a historic role in Britain’s music history, with artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, The Who, The Kinks and The Sex Pistols beginning their recording careers within its various buildings. The 12 Bar Club in particular has acted as the venue for the debut gigs of successful artists including Keane, Adele, Katie Melua and Jeff Buckley.
A number of prominent musicians have spoken out in an attempt to save the club from closure, including Pete Townsend of The Who, however it appears that it might be too little too late for the small venue that plans to relocate to Holloway Road in the new year. That being said, a petition titled ‘Don’t Bin Tin Pan Alley’ is currently in circulation that aims to protect Denmark Street as a music heritage site. The petition has already received over 17,000 signatures and will be presented to Camden Borough Council in the new year.
