The first time I saw Danny Brown's face, his tour partner at the time ASAP Rocky, was interviewing him for Noisey. The conversation flowed naturally, especially with them being so high and all, but there he was the man behind huge independent albums like ‘XXX’, wild haired with no teeth who's giggle is like something from Cartoon Network. Danny Brown has torn up stages all over the world, not bad for an independent Hip Hop artist in his 30's. For one night only, in a much anticipated return to the UK, XOYO Loves series brought Danny Brown back once again to delight the gawping mouths of London fans.
On November 29th, The Coronet welcomed back the Detroit rapper with a cascade of DJs who could have easily sold out the venue themselves. Mark Ronson, who hasn’t had a London gig in a good while, prepared us all for Danny’s 2am slot.
After a perfectly hyped hip hop mix from Ronson, Brown eventually made the stage and he wasn't about to disappoint. With a voice that’s even more prominent in real life, Danny danced'n'swirled around the stage like a ballerina swimming in cocaine. It was beautiful, strange and camp, yet only cemented the respect I have gained for the man.
The mosh pit that circulated at the stage was as hardcore as any MGK or OFWGKTA show. If you were in the middle, there was only one rule; turn it out or get out.
Not only is Danny Brown's voice one of the most unique in hip hop today, but he also has some serious skill! Pretty awesome for someone who has a clear drug & drinking habbit, as well as having confessed to selling crack and going to jail. The energy of the show was propa piff as well with the supporting DJs, Rustie, Mark Ronson, Redlight & more I was certainly satisfied all night. Bring on more XOYO , bring on more!
