Review: SubDub London @ The Coronet

Reggae | Tuesday 12th November 2013 | Noam

The first thing that struck me was the size of the venue. With an upper floor, a good-sized smoking area and a nice stage, the Coronet is much more resourceful than it lets on. Iration Steppas’ and Mungo’s Hifi’s sound systems, side by side, strategically placed south, east and west of the stage were ready to pump out that tremendous bass.

With multiple 30-minute sets each, Iration and Mungo’s offered a nice variety of roots, dub, steppas and dancehall. The clash was very heterogeneous, not what you would usually expect from these types of soundclashes. Nonetheless, it was still an agreeable succession of tunes.

Brilliant covers/remixes of classics from both sound systems had the effect of getting a massive, borderline silly, grin on my face. On the one hand Abortion (Black Uhuru) had become Iration (‘Iration…Iration…’). On the other hand Mungo’s played its own interpretation of Wailing Souls’ classic Fire House Rock.  Overall a short but very enjoyable set on the behalf of both sound systems.

Although the crowd was not the usual reggae crowd, it was bursting with enthusiasm at the sound of some insanely loud bass. Followed up by DJs playing dubstep, drum and bass and housy electro on dub sound systems, the night ended being unusually eclectic in its range of musical genres. In sum, a fun night out and enough musical diversity to please everybody.
