Bambi @ Proud, Camden

Indie | Friday 1st November 2013 | Alex

Situated right in the centre of Camden’s bosom, Proud played host to a number of things last night (mostly lewd, depraved, and sordid acts that one dare not talk about at such a tender hour of the morn’) but most notably, it was the venue for young Essex based Bambi to showcase their latest single, “Reap From The Dying Love”.

It’s only been 7 months for Bambi but they’ve started out very strong having performed on the mainstage at this year’s Brownstock Festival and debut single, “All Along”, was picked up by the Top Gear team who have a surprisingly classy music taste for a show containing Jeremy Clarkson, who has no class. What was really pleasing to hear from a band so early in their development was that the music showed a maturity that belied their 7 months of work. Particularly, when they used a heavier bass riff bringing to mind Foals’ “Inhaler” which was proclaimed as one of the best tracks of the year. To have produced something comparable to this without having released an album yet is no easy feat but Bambi pulled it off well.

One massive criticism of the show was, and this is no fault of the band’s, that it was Halloween and few people were out to see a gig. As we know, it is a night of fun, frolic and costumed fornication, and having access to a burlesque influenced corridor through the room that the band were playing in ensured that there was no real cohesion in the crowd. It was an ever changing mass of people who wanted to watch, blokes who were looking for their friends who left when they went to the gents and people that genuinely weren’t interested.

All this said, Bambi are a great act to keep an eye on. The rhythm section’s tight, the vocals are emotive and the guitars weave brilliantly. It seems they could come out with a great album if given the time, a bit of fine tuning and a couple years more under their belt. A must see in the future when playing at a venue that cannot be walked through every 15 seconds.
