TV Review- The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek

Tuesday 29th October 2013 | Lauren

The world has been a little lacking in sketch shows recently, there was a time, long ago, that sketch shows were the way to make your name in the comedy world, stars erupted from shows such as Little Britain, The Catherine Tate Show and The Fast Show. Sketch shows haven’t been in the television schedules much of late, but all that’s about to change with the arrival of BBC 2’s brand new The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek.

Starring Graeme Rooney (the Ginge), Paul Charlton (the Geordie) and Kevin O’Loughlin (the Geek), and set in Glasgow, the trio mixes up ordinary characters with unbelievable situations (which is always the best recipe for a sitcom), such as a scarecrow having to put in an application at the Job Centre to be a coat hanger, thanks to him falling in love with a crow.

There are some sketches which are genuinely hilarious, if you didn’t manage to laugh at the intimidating seagulls, then I’m afraid that there’s something wrong with you. But some sketches fell a little...flat. The CGI sections seemed a bit random, and almost like they were put in as an afterthought, to give the show something different. But surely, as a sketch show, there are always going to be some sketches which don’t work, and some which do. Not every sketch is going to be memorable, but more often than not, the sketches were very funny - a particular favourite was the complicated love life of a ventriloquist and his dummy.

If we get another series, perhaps a move into something a bit darker, or a bit more modern will take The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek from a show which was quite funny, into a show which will become hilarious.
