With most people still at the Babyshambles concert at the O2 Brixton by midnight (due to Babyshambles arriving on stage 90 minutes late), the evening started out quietly before the official audience arrived. There was a chilled and relaxed vibe until then, with some up-and-coming bands playing to small audiences who were getting in their drinks before the crowds started flowing in. Bands such as Electric Press Gig and Red Eye’ Dazey were impressive, getting the audience really pumped, and the place soon became really live by about 1am. A few birdies (i.e. band members!) told me that the non-headlining bands were not given a proper backstage or any freebies such as a free drink - free drinks being the custom for live musicians who are not paid - but they all played well despite this. Tickets were £10, which would have been reasonable if the bar hadn’t charged practically criminal prices - but the quality of the music and the atmosphere made up for the expensive drinks and the grouchy staff!
