The Feevah; can you tell us a little bit about your background?
Yeah my name is ‘The Feevah’, I was born in Barbados, the genre of music I do is electro-rap or electronic hip-hop. I like to bring that Barbadian party feeling into my music; so that’s why people say that my beats are a bit hypnotic. It makes you want to move, that is the main element in my music. I have been doing it for quite some time and then I got into artist management and development. I am here now with my first UK debut single ‘Get Ya Swagga On’ which will be coming out in 6 weeks’ time.
Where did ‘The Feevah’ come from?
The Feevah, back in Barbados I run an entertainment company called ‘Feevah Entertainment’. It was artist management and development, after a while when I returned to Barbados I decided to turn the Feevah into a person. The reason why I am called the Feevah also is because I am quite open to other artists as part of the act, so if I perform with a live band it will still be the Feevah show, or if I have backing singers or any featured artist it will still be the Feevah. It is quite a broad name; it is not my name but the name of my act.
So you started with an artist development company; how is that going? Are you still doing that or are you just a musician now?
Right now, I work with electronic records and I am developing my career. I still manage other artists, so as I get, I give to charity in terms of artists, because that is where I want to place my emphasis from a charitable perspective, other artists developing and breaking through as well.
It is always good to give back. When did your love for music begin? Did you come from a musical home, how did it happen?
My mum was a pastor from when I was young, so she was always walking up and down singing hymns. From the time I was seven I was doing soprano, I would sing lead for the school choir and stuff. But when I was about twelve /thirteen and it was all about being cool, I found that soprano didn’t really merge with who I was trying to be. So I converted my style into hip-hop, because rap was the thing. I still put melodies in my music so I still incorporate a bit of singing but hip-hop is my main genre.
Okay, cool. Let’s talk about your track that is coming out “Get Ya Swagga On”; how did you come up with this song?
Okay I came up with ‘Get Ya Swagga On’ when I was on vacation in Barbados; what I noticed was that everybody was running and looking fit, people in their fifties did not look their age, they look like they were thirty-five! In the Caribbean, everybody is full of swagga and they are on this whole watch your health thing. That’s where it came from; I was like “yo, everyone has their own unique swagga and flow; the way they present themselves”. I was mesmerised by it, so I just had to write a song about this.
On this track, you have Afrikan Boy on it, so how did you link up with Afrikan Boy?
When I moved over to the new studio with Electronic records; Afrikan boy and Dubs were in another studio and a lot of times they were playing their music it was coming into our studio. So we developed this relationship, when I introduced the ‘Get Ya Swagga On’ instrumental, it was electronic; it was that soca-type of song. Afrikan boy and Dubs wanted to be on it, and we created this real good energy on the verses; what was missing was the female element. Then we brought Tara Lavin, because she is just so good and she has powerful vocals, which brought out the hip-hop element. Now the product is much better than we anticipated it to be.
I understand that you did a dance competition for ‘Get Ya Swagga On’, how did you come up with the idea? Who won? What did the winners get out of it?
The ‘Get Ya Swagga On’ dance competition, we promoted it online and we got some interest from some French cannulise, Miami, Barbados, UK and other parts of the world. There were these guys called ‘Super-Sega Brothers’ they had just done the ‘Tyga - Molly’ video and they submitted a video to us; that was the one which was the most popular. They had it on their own channel; it got the most views so they won. The prize was £1000 and they would appear in the official music video.
So do we have a release date of the video yet?
The release date of the video I would say would be the end of September. Right now, the ‘Get Ya Swagga On’ single is online; iTunes, amazon and so on. But the official dates will the end of September and the same for the video release as well.
In the meantime, where can we pick up ‘Get Ya Swagga On’?
