£250,000 -The World's Most Expensive Burger
Last week saw the world's most expensive burger served at a press conference.
What made this burger so expensive? Top quality beef? The freshest ingredients around? The fact it was made in a lab perhaps? Dr. Mark Post's hamburger creation is biologically identical to beef, the only difference being that one was grown in a petri dish and the other in a farmer's field.
The project came about after growing concerns that cows are having a negative effect on the environment. Yes that's right, not only do cows need a lot of feeding but the aftermath of their digestion in the form of methane (i.e. the amount those smelly, four-legged, grass munching creatures fart) is having a negative effect on global warming. This new production method will mean that there will be less cows to feed and that less methane gas will be released into the atmosphere.
This new method also sees a positive change for animal lovers as less cows used for farming means less cows being led to the slaughterhouse.
Another bonus seems to be its health benefits. The burger contains absolutely no fat. Perhaps once developed fully it could be the next diet trick for meat lovers who want to lose a few inches? The down-side of having no fat however means it lacks in taste. Nothing a bit of seasoning can't sort out though I'm sure!
The new meat creation doesn't come cheap though. The total cost of the project so far has been a staggering £250,000. I think I'll be sticking to supermarket own burgers until the price comes down a little bit.
So what's next? Will people soon be buying products such as Petri Dish Pork, Scientific Steak or Laboratory Lamb from the local supermarket? It may seem like the stuff of sci-fi but last week proved that it's definitely possible.
