Toolroom Record's 6th Birthday

House | Thursday 1st August 2013 | Sidd

Maidstone isn't somewhere that springs to mind as a hotbed of house, but the truth is that it's bursting at the rim. It's produced some of the best British tech house in the last 5 years such as Nic or Mark fanciulli, but probably best known is Mark Knight's Toolroom Knights record label, now showcasing anyone who's anyone.

In October I went to their 6th birthday at Ministry of Sound and if you've never been to a Toolroom party, you're in the wrong place. It might've been characteristically cold - October in the queue but inside it was July in Ibiza. The big man pulled out all the stops; opening with 'Alright' made it immediately clear the inevitable; this birthday party made that episode of super sweet sixteen you saw look like your mate's McDonald's party in year 3.

Mark knight smashed the box room all night long, blending ibiza tech house seamlessly with some raw, bone shaking deep house, the kind you can only really find on the island. One moment you were on a boat in Ibiza with cocktails, and bikinis, the next you were in a dark basement in east london. It's hard to describe and even at the time i remember wondering how it worked at all but somehow he pulled it off without breaking a sweat.

It was one of those nights when the party never really finishes, only the music turns off, the party was relentlessly energetic all night. That said, no-one left without their fix, with a big, Mark Knight smile plastered on their face, it was his birthday but only I felt spoiled.
