Sub Focus Interview

Ahead of this years Relentless Energy Drink Nass Festival this weekend, we caught up with Drum & Bass producer Sub Focus. How did you end up getting signed to Ram Records? Is it true that you someone handed your tape to Andy C..and it all began from there? Well it was a CD, but yeah that's how it happened. I guess it shows that giving out demos in clubs like that can still work. Your first album was highly anticipated, were you pleased with the end result? Yeah I've been massively pleased with the results, especially the positive reaction to the non D&B tracks. Are you working on any new remixes at the moment? I've had some great offers but I'm mainly trying to concentrate on writing my next album. Is it important for you to push the boundaries with different genres of music? Well it’s important to me to feel like I'm writing music that's fresh and new in some way. I'm really enjoying writing music at varied tempos now as it allows so many more interesting ideas to come out. Are there any new artists that your feeling at the moment? Yeah loads. Recently SBTRKT, Skrillex and Odd Future are some of my favourite new(ish) artists. D&B wise, Wilkinson is a new producer making some great tracks at the moment. “Time Warp” absolutely smashed it! Did you realise at that time that it was gonna be such a massive tune? I was really excited about that track when I made it, as I felt it sounded like something fresh - the Techno/Electro sounds and switching time signature. But I was totally surprised by Radio 1 playlisting it though as it is a very hard dancefloor track. Where can we catch you next? I'm currently in Ibiza about to play at Space. I will be hitting a whole bunch of festivals this summer, the next big ones are Global Gathering and Nass Festival. If you were invisible for the day what trouble would you get up to? Ahh there are so many options. I’d probably mess around doing subtle ghostly stuff to freak people out - randomly moving objects etc. You can catch Sub Focus at Relentless Energy Drink Nass Festival at Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet on 8TH - 10TH July.
