Most countries have such relaxed policies when it comes to corruption in politics that it would almost seem strange for a politician not to engage in corrupt activities, but South Korea should be viewed as a shining example for the rest of the world to follow when it comes to this particular area.
This is because the East Asian country has just sentenced its former president Park Geun-hye to twenty-four years in prison for abuse of power and coercion. In addition to her prison sentence, she must also pay a fine of 18bn won (£12m).
The specific charges against Geun-hye were that she had used her position of power to force companies like Samsung into donating large sums of money to foundations run by her friend Choi Soon-sil, with whom Geun-hye was also sharing confidential documents.
With all the corruption prevalent in politics outside of South Korea, it is more than likely that many people will praise the country for implementing a legal system which forces politicians to serve the people rather than their own personal interests.
