ALBUM OF THE MONTH: Maya Jane Coles - Comfort
Tuesday 9th July 2013 | Beth
Over the last couple of years, London-based DJ/producer Maya Jane Coles has become one of the biggest names in house music. After being voted ‘Producer of the Year’ by DJ Mag in 2011 and creating her own record label I/AM/ME in 2012, Maya is continuing her streak of success with the release of her debut album Comfort.
Despite starting her career on a more hip-hop foot, Maya has continued the deep house vibes from her EP’s that we know and love her for. The album is packed with guest vocals, including former Hercules & Love Affair member Kim Ann Foxman and Swedish singer Karin Park, who features on Maya’s latest single ‘Everything’. Maya also takes to the vocals herself on ‘Stranger’ and a few others, showing she has an infectious voice to add to her list of talents.
Tracks such as ‘Easier To Hide’ and ‘Take A Ride’ featuring Miss Kittin are layered on top of a low bass, with infectious beats and an unusual, yet enchanting, feeling of space. ‘Blame’ featuring Nadine Shah also follows these themes, however boasts an unexpected guitar intro that echoes sounds we would expect to hear from the likes of The XX. Comfort is an altogether brilliant example of what the multi-talented Maya has to offer and we can be sure her seemingly never-ending rise doesn’t end here.
