Florida Manatees Will Survive For Another Century!

Other | Monday 17th April 2017 | David

We may have destroyed our planet beyond all hope of repair, but at least one species won't be going away anytime soon.

The United States Geological Survey published a new report this month which estimates that the Florida Manatee (a subspecies of the West Indian manatee), which was previously thought to be endangered, will likely survive for at least another one-hundred years.

The study noted that there are currently around 6,620 in Florida's waters, more than six times the amount that existed in the seventies.

The population of the species is likely to double over the next fifty years, although the animals will still be at risk from environmental and habitat changes, as well as fatal collisions with watercrafts, are also an issue.

Manatees are also a key source of tourism and revenue in Florida, as thousands of tourists travel to the state to catch a glimpse of the animals in their natural habitat.

So the continued existence of the sepcies is clearly a win-win situation for all parties involved!
