Sexism has always played a large role in Indian society, which is why female infanticide (the killing of newborn girls) has and sadly still is occurring in the country.
Reasons why this horrific practice occurs are usually because it is commonly believed that females will not earn as much as men, or that they will become less successful in general.
Infanticide is truly a terrible practice, which is why it is a relief to know that some Indian doctors are trying to combat the practice by delivering baby girls for free of charge.
Dr. Ganesh Rakh began the practice of delivering baby girls at no cost to parents seven years ago, after witnessing an angry father slap a woman after realising that her unborn baby was a girl.
Rakh has said that informing parents that their child was a girl and not a boy was harder than informing them of a passing relative.
After delivering a baby girl, Rakh and his team of nurses celebrate the birth with cake, candles, and roses, in the same way that the family would have celebrated were the baby a boy. Their celebration also helps to appease both parents.
Rakh's practice of not charging a fee to deliver girls has had a huge impact across the whole of India.
Over 17,000 doctors have either reduced fees or agreed to also deliver girls for free after Rakh began delivering girls free of charge.
