Annecy: the Venice of the Alps

Monday 13th March 2017 | Chloe

Contemplate idyllic landscapes and the second largest glacial lake in Annecy, just south of France.

You can take a boat trip or a pedal boat to admire the wonders that surround it. If you have the soul of an athlete, then enjoy the various activities around the lake that are offered such as: diving, water skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding.

But if you want to take it easy, you can lie down on one of Annecy's nine beaches or have a swim in the lake, which can sometimes reach 25 degrees.

After a good swim you might be feeling thirsty, so why not you complete your premenade at Le pont des amours (the bridge of lovers), in front of a sunset, immortalised by a quick photo. But don't forget to put down your phone and lose yourself in the small streets.

Admire a magnificent view by visiting the castle of Annecy which overlooks the city. The castle offers a beautiful view over the rooftops of the historic district and today it’s a museum that houses collections of regional and contemporary art.

Annecy is also a cultural city with a certain heritage. Between the four churches, the old prisons open to the public (including the Palais de l’Ile, an old stronghold in the 12th century which is now a museum), history buffs have enough to do.

But for all of you film buffs, if you are in Annecy from the 12th to the 17th of June 2017, you should go see some short film screenings at the International Animated Film Festival. You will not be disappointed!

However if you are looking for a night to remember, come a little later on the 5th of August, for the biggest pyrotechnic show in Europe. It is a non-stop show, combined with music, fireworks, and you dancing your butt off.

Annecy, the Venice of the Alps, sees this name reinforced at the end of winter, with the Venetian Carnival. You can enjoy hundreds of masked people scrolling slowly along the canals in sumptuous costumes. Let yourself be amazed at this spectacle before going to taste some dishes.

To finish off make sure you try out some French cuisines at Savoyard and Haute-Savoie. You have a wide choice of dishes from raclette, tartiflette, fondue, deli platters, to crozets, matafans, Savoie cake, and bugnies. All this accompanied with a glass of local wine or Genépi, will make you whole Annecy experience even better.
