If you don’t already know, watch out for the name Emery Warman. Originally from Hungary and now part of the London scene, Warman has seen support from the likes of Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Nicole Moudaber and Paco Osuna, and with three massive recent EPs, plus exciting releases coming from his NoExcuse Music label, 2016 is all set to be his year. We caught him for a quick chat to find out what’s got him so inspired in the studio and what he’s got in store for this summer.
Hey Emery, how are you? Life treating you well?
I’m doing good, thanks! So far so good, everything is going really well!
You had a NoExcuse Music label night at Egg recently, how did it go?
We had a great vibe, and the crowd is always there to support us. It’s truly an honour to have a monthly residency at the recently announced 54th best club in the world!
What other exciting projects are coming with the label?
We have some exciting new releases on the way, and even some vinyl releases in the near future.
Let’s take it back a bit. Tell us how you first got into music. What was it about the London scene that drew you here from Hungary?
London offered better outreach to the music scene that appealed to me, and the ability to perform my music to a bigger audience was a big push.
And how do you feel the scene has changed since you first started out?
There have been so many dramatic changes over the years. The whole purpose of the DJ has evolved and it’s so much more intense to be a performer these days than before. A DJ has a lot more responsibilities, especially with the boom of social media, to be successful in this industry.
Marco Carola is a fan of yours and has been playing your music a lot recently. What does it mean to have the support of someone like him and the rest of the Music On crew?
To be honest, this feeling is incredible. When I started making music, I set out to make songs that I enjoyed. To see that these heavy hitters are such big fans of my music too, this feeling cannot be explained in words!
You’ve been very busy in the studio recently – the Double Face EP recently came out on D-Floor, with a Deeperfect EP and a Viva Ltd EP following – what has got you feeling so inspired?
The constant appreciation of the music and seeing my music being played by superstar DJs to huge crowds….I think that’s enough to inspire any producer to keep doing what they are doing! My love is for the music, and that’s what keeps me motivated to create more!
How do the releases differ from each other?
I suppose the tracks are different in each EP! Just kidding! Each EP expresses a different mood, a different flare of ideas that I had. My original ideas are based around my life, so I take the idea and let it grow until I feel it’s ready to be released to the masses.
Do you prefer being in the studio or out touring and playing loads of shows?
I like to maintain a good balance of both. Staying in the studio for the amount of hours I do can be quite exhausting, so doing shows regularly is very important to refresh the mind.
Recently there have been some people in the industry suggesting that tech house as a genre is going the same way as EDM in that it’s getting formulaic, less exciting and less original. What are your thoughts on that?
I guess to an extent this can be true, and it’s evident that some producers are cutting and snipping each other’s tracks in their productions. I try to think out of the box with my music. I use a range of natural sounds from real instruments and arrange them in a way that I feel works best.
What/where are your favourite places in London?
Egg London - by far! Although I have had some really fun nights at Gigalum too. Maybe I would like to try and host an event at Fabric in the near future - that could be really interesting.
What are you most looking forward to for the rest of 2016?
The summer is coming, and that brings me closer to my gigs in Ibiza at Sankeys for VIVa Warriors with Steve Lawler! I am very excited about this!
What one song or piece of music changed your life?
Michael Jackson – ‘Billie Jean’ without a doubt!
If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be and why?
Pizza - can you imagine the summer party with a pool filled with pizza?! Just perfect!
If you could play a show anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
It would have to be the Amnesia terrace for sure! The atmosphere in there is just something else!
How do you define success?
When you can sit back and watch the work you have done be appreciated and shared by anyone other than yourself, that is a success. Even making one person happy or changing their perspective is a success in my eyes.
