Tuesday 25th June 2013 | Conor
2013 has been a somewhat spectacular year in terms of music. We’ve had Yeezus, the new album from Kanye, In Love, the fantastic debut from Brummie indie newcomers Peace, M.B.V, the long awaited third album from My Bloody Valentine and The 20/20 Experience courtesy of Justin Timberlake. So we find ourselves at the midway point of the year. Rather than let our eyes glaze over with nostalgia, we thought we would look forward to the future instead, and bring you a list of records set for release in the second half of 2013.
Arctic Monkeys – AM, September 9th
Few bands cause as much a stir as we have come to expect from the Arctic Monkeys. At the smallest hint of news regarding the Sheffield band the internet never fails to find itself awash with a mad frenzy of excitement. Yesterday (24th June) was no exception, as the Arctics announced the details of their fifth studio album, entitled AM. The 12 track record is set for release on September 9th, and will feature new single Do I Wanna Know? The new track will appear alongside their 2012 single R U Mine? as well as Mad Sounds, which the band has been showcasing in recent sets. Album closer I Wanna be Yours features the words of influential punk poet John Cooper Clarke. The Arctic Monkeys will headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury on Friday.
Jay Z – Magna Carta Holy Grail, July 4th
Magna Carter Holy Grail was only announced just over a week ago, but is to be released on July 4th, which is in just over one week. It will be the twelfth solo studio album from Jay Z, one of hip hops leading artists. RnB crooner Frank Ocean has been confirmed to appear on the album, whilst appearances from Nas, Justin Timberlake and Drake, among others look highly likely.
Placebo – Loud Like Love, September 16th
The announcement of Placebo’s seventh album was a cryptic affair, with the band instagramming pictures of the letter ‘L’ in various places before displaying a countdown on their website accompanied with the hashtag #LLL. This kicked their fans into a whirlwind of hype and discussion as to what the band were getting at. Eventually, on 21st May, Loud Like Love was announced. The album will consist of 10 tracks and will be released on 16th September. The band is set to tour Europe in late 2013 in support of the album, including two dates at Brixton Academy.
MGMT, MGMT, August 20th
American psychedelic quintet MGMT are to release their third album MGMT this August. Critical reaction towards its predecessor Congratulations were mixed, but critics worldwide united in showing their love for the group’s debut release Oracular Spectacular. The band released Alien Days, the first single to be taken from MGMT on Record Store Day this year.
The Horrors, TBA, September
Following on from 2011’s Skying, The Horrors are set to release their fourth album in September. The band’s bassist Rhys Webb has described the sound of the album as ‘very fun and danceable.’ As of yet, there is no definite release date, or a title for the self-produced album.
Azealia Banks, Broke With Expensive Taste, TBA
The most anticipated album that never appeared. Banks cancelled a host of UK festival appearances last year to work on her debut album, but no news ever surfaced. Seemingly, every release from this album has been delayed for some reason or another, but it seems that the album may be seeing the light of day soon enough. In a flurry of tweets posted on Sunday, Azealia revealed that the album was 80% done.
Other notable releases:
Swim Deep, Where the Heaven Are We, July 29th
Goldfrapp, Tales of Us, September 9th
M.I.A, Matangi, TBA
