We’re almost four months into the New Year (where has time gone?) – how are those New Year’s Resolutions coming along? I think we can all agree that January was more of a trial month than anything and February is always a bit of a weird one so let's just put that to bed.
One of my main resolutions this year was to de-clutter my entire life. I mean ALL of it; get rid of clothes I no longer wear, get rid of the useless junk I’ve been hoarding for years and even de-clutter my social life. We’re now in March and I’ve finally gotten round to it and I feel a hell of a lot clearer and organised now that I’ve got the ball rolling. It always feels so daunting to begin with, but it's amazing what a few de-clutter steps can do for your mind. Why don’t you give it a try? Here are our ten tips for clearing out the clutter in your life:
1 – Turn all the hangers in your wardrobe the wrong way round. Each time you wear something, turn the hanger the right way. After six months, if there are any hangers still facing the other way, get rid of the clothes – you’re clearly hoarding.
2 – Give your room or entire house the spring clean of the century. I’m talking about moving your sofas to get to the floor, behind your cupboards and tables, ALL OF IT! A clean house is a clean mind ;)
3 – Have a closer look at your social life. Do you exhaust yourself trying to keep up with people who don’t keep up with you? Phase it out. Friendships are a two way street and you’re only doing yourself harm by holding on to dead relationships.
4 – Empty your fridge and kitchen cupboards and restock them with simple, healthy foods. Stop leaving containers or plates in the fridge and start getting frugal with your food shopping. There’s nothing cool about wasting food.
5 – De-clutter your computer/laptop. You have NO idea how much better you’ll feel after you organise your folders and files. Don’t forget your emails!
6 – Think about your daily routine. If you sometimes feel like a walking mess, getting some order in your life might fix things. We tend to feel a lot better when our days have direction and a plan, so get on it!
7 - Go through every draw, cupboard and shelf. You’ll be shocked at how much useless junk you have lying around. Everything you own should have value, either because it’s beautiful, functional or simply because you just love it. Get rid of everything else.
8 – Stop letting your mail pile up. Nothing provokes anxiety more than a stack of unopened bills and letters. Keep on top of things and get into the habit of responding to things as soon as you receive them.
9 – Do your life admin. Learn how to do your taxes, get registered with a local GP and dentist (and actually visit them), know where your nearest polling station is etc. This is the first step to proper adulting.
10 – And last but by all means not least – sort out your finances! Cancel any direct debits that you hardly use, open up a second savings or spending account if you have to and more importantly, keep a written down record of your outgoings and the dates that you’ll be charged. Unexpected bills are not cool.
So there it is - our ten tips for de-cluttering your life and mind. Let's take the baby steps and win at life!
