Brazilian Inmates Get to Broaden Their Minds and Reduce Their Sentence

Other | Wednesday 9th March 2016 | Arash

Prisons in Brazil are allowing inmates to reduce their sentences by 4 days for every piece of literature they read and write a report on. Topics include science, philosophy, literature or classic books, allowing them to shave 48 days off their sentence per year.

The reports they write must, “make correct use of paragraphs, be free of corrections, use margins and legible joined-up writing” according to the notice which was published in the official gazette.

The programme has been dubbed, “Redemption through Reading” and consists of a special panel who will decide which of the inmates is eligible to participate.

The prisoners have four weeks to read each book and write an essay, and the programme has been a success so far. Andre Kehdi a lawyer for Sao Paulo gave his opinion on the programme, stating, “A person can leave prison more enlightened and with an enlarged vision of the world,” he went on to say that, “Without a doubt they will leave a better person.”
