Meet the next McQueens: Central Saint Martins at LFW AW16

Other | Monday 22nd February 2016 | Cristina

London art school Central Saint Martins closed the first day of London Fashion Week AW16, Friday 19. The show, Central Saint Martins MA, started at 8 at the BFC Show Space. It’s the only course on the official LFW schedule, being the only course in the UK, and perhaps the world, to consistently turn out the next generation of fashion talent. CSM Fashion MA graduates include Alexander McQueen, Alistair Mackie, Christopher Kane and Mary Katrantzou.

This year’s designs were as bold as ever, with Kiko Kostadinov and Richard Quinn masking all models - perhaps a nod to the androgyny and radicalism of Leigh Bowery. Quinn’s designs were more linked to fetish wear, whilst the morph suits worn under Kostadinov’s designs were in keeping with the industrial workwear inspired collection. Out of collections shown here, Kostadinov’s is perhaps the closest to streetwear.

John Alexander Skelton soothed Kostadinov’s harsh, urban silhouettes with romantic knitwear made entirely from sustainable sources. The wool was obtained from British sheep and woven in traditional factories in north England. The collection balanced luxury with the streets, slipping in hints of leather and distressed fabrics.
