Physicist Stephen Hawking has recently stated that he would be surprised if humans survive the 21st Century.
Speaking at a lecture, Reith he warned of the dangers posed to mankind by itself. Hawking listed nuclear weapons, aggressive A.I, genetically modified viruses and global warming as those threats that have the potential to end the human race in coming years.
Hawking told the audience that humans will need to move onto other planets in order to survive.
‘Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year might be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. By that time, we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.’
This isn't the first time Hawking has warned of potential threats which contain the potential to end life as we know it, last year he signed a petition along with a 1000 other leading scientists arguing that the pursuit to develop a killer robot by the world's militaries would kick start a devastating arms race.
Hawking did however, state that he remained optimistic, saying that humans had always found a way to survive. He also called for more young people to get involved in the sciences claiming: ‘There is nothing like the Eureka moment of discovering something that no one knew before.’
