Kill the Housing Bill

Other | Monday 25th January 2016 | Cristina

On the 30th of this month, hundreds will march from the Imperial War Museum to Downing Street in protest of the impending passing of the Housing Bill, which would mark the end of social housing. The March Against the Housing Bill is hosted by Lambeth Housing Activists.

The bill scraps lifetime tenancies and shortens council tenancies to 2 to 5 years, eradicating tenants’ right to pass them onto their children. The bill states that if households start to earn above £40,000 – a couple on the living wage – they will have to pay a ‘pay-to-stay’ tax for the difference between their social rent and the market rent, which could be over half their income.

The event, starting at 12pm and ending at 2pm, has over 900 attending on Facebook but will rely on turnout on the day to put its message across.
