The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) recently revealed that dance music is growing faster than other genres in the world of streaming.
Audio streams have doubled since last year according to the Official Charts Company and BPI, with electronic and dance music acts comprising most new sales. The research spanned the period from January to October 2015.
Fresh talent like Disclosure and Years & Years, as well as classic dance music acts like the Prodigy (pictured above) and the Chemical Brothers contributed significantly to the trend in the statistics.
According to the BPI, house and garage sales combined accounted for 48% of digital and physical singles sold in the first ten months of 2015. Mainstream dance music accounted for 38% of sales, drum & bass 5.7%, electronica 3.2%, rave/hard dance 2% and trance 1.5%.
EDM beat house/garage by a small margin to being the most popular subgenre of electronic music in streaming, contributing to 46% of sales. The streaming service Spotify announced in December 2015 that Kygo has become the fastest artist to hit one billion streams on Spotify.
Within dance music and outside of it, the UK is flourishing with regards to streaming. UK acts compose half of the dance music consumed in the UK between January to October 2015.
Additionally, three of the five shortlisted albums for best dance/electronic album at the 2016 Grammys are by UK acts.
