Since emerging on the scene in 2008, Nick Curly has established himself as one of the most recognisable and in-demand DJs in the world – his club-ready releases have formed an integral part of the ‘Mannheim Sound’, his label 8bit Records has reached its tenth birthday, and he has held Trust parties all over the world. Ahead of the event series touching down in the UK, Nick tells us what he’s got in store for us.
Hi Nick, how’s it going?
Good thanks. Back in Turkey for a bit. Much warmer than Germany, thank god.
Did you have a good summer?
I can’t complain.
You played a lot in Ibiza this season, how has the scene on the island changed since your first time there?
Biggest thing I miss are the open-air events, because I had the best times back in the days at the old Space Terrace during the carry on parties. That was really something special.
The Trust series is hitting the UK this autumn, what can people expect from the parties?
Great music, good times, late nights.
What spurred you on to launch the project in the first place?
I was a promoter before I was a DJ or even a producer. Back to the roots!
You’re playing at Egg this Saturday and then again on New Year’s Eve, what is so special about the club?
Good layout, great sound on the terrace. This club is under-rated actually. It took me a few years to play there but once I did, I am back there a lot. German promoter too – hi Hans!
Apart from the Trust nights, what else are you most looking forward to for the rest of the year?
First Christmas with my beautiful daughter.
Your Sleeping Dogs EP has recently come out on Truesoul, talk us through the inspiration behind the record.
I had this vocal sample and built a beat around. When it was finished I thought it would fit perfect on Truesoul. Sent it to Adam, he liked it. Deal!
You also recently did a mix for Drumcode Radio, why do you like working with Adam Beyer?
Because I do really like the way he and his team work. Always loyal and sticking together, and they doing a great job with both labels. I mean Adam is a techno legend. I’m more than happy to work with him.
8bit Records has reached its tenth birthday, congratulations! How are you celebrating?
10 parties in 10 cities of course.
What’s been the highlight in the decade the label has been going?
How strong we are at the moment today, and the positive feedback we still get even after the first generation of 8bit fans have changed.
And what is the aim for the next ten years?
More of the same I hope.
You’re nominated for Best Tech House DJ award at the Sankeys Awards 2015, are you going to win it?
I didn’t see the nominations but I imagine there are some strong names in there. But I played well there this summer. Why not?!
Where’s your favourite place to play in the world?
At the moment, Argentina.
And where’s your favourite place to party?
Barcelona for our Trust event.
What was the first record that made you fall in love with house music?
Tony di Bart – ‘The Real Thing’.
What’s the worst trouble you’ve ever been in?
Had to pay protection money to a policeman in the Dominican Republic.
If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be and why?
Coconut water, love it!
Who or what are you most in love with right now?
My daughter and our Trust parties.
What is your life motto?
The best things in life are not things.
What’s your message to the young people of today?
Enjoy your life.
