Philip George on his upcoming release, his inspiration and ice cream

House | Wednesday 16th September 2015 | Ryan

We catch up with the man behind the smash hit 'Wish You Were Mine' and talk about his upcoming release, his inspiration and ice cream.

Morning man, how’s things?
Yeah really great thanks mate, yourself?

I’m doing well thanks, So we’ll dive straight in - you have a new single out in October, can you tell me a little bit about it? What’s the inspiration for the track?
The track's called ‘Alone No More’. It's written with a friend of mine Anton Powers, who actually does A&R for the label I'm on. Obviously it's the follow up to ‘Wish You Were Mine’ and yeah we wanted to go for a similar style but with some more R&B influence.

Do you think there is more pressure on the second release after ‘Wish You Were Mine’ did so well, sitting at number two in the UK charts for three weeks? Are you pushing for that number one or are you just gonna ride it out and see what happens?
Do you know what? I’m not really thinking about that, I’d just be happy to get into the top 40 again. But there was definitely pressure for the track to be up to the same standard as ‘Wish You Were Mine’.

How long have you been sitting on this track? Is it something you wrote a while back and it just came into play after ‘Wish You Were Mine’ was released?
The original idea for the track actually came from Anton - we kinda just got together and I put my production stamp on it and it grew into the finished product. The formula actually worked really well for this one. I mean I didn't even expect for it to be as popular as it is this far, so it’s really nice to see it being picked up on already.

By the looks of things, you have had an incredible summer; EDC, Creamfields, Sankeys, WHP, Cream and Bestival to name a few. I’m assuming you’ve been playing it out. What’s the response been like for it?
It’s been really good actually, depending on where I play. But it's really cool to just have a look over the crowd and see people singing it. I’ve actually done a remix for it, it’s a bit more underground, which is great because I have had these two versions so wherever I’m playing I always get chance to put it into my set.

What kind of style is the remix in?
It's way more dark, underground, really bouncy. It works best in the smaller club venues.

I read somewhere that you dropped out of uni and just thought "fuck it, I’m gonna risk this whole production thing". What sparked that fire under you?
I've been producing for five years even before university and I guess I was in the uni studios and the people who were there just had pretty big egos and just weren't very nice people. So y’know I got sick pretty quick of doing lectures with these people and thought “I’m just gonna go home and produce music”. I’ve got nothing against the course but for me it felt like a waste of time and everyone seemed very negative about how there aren't many jobs in studio work and stuff.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
I’ve only ever had two jobs, they were alright. I use to work in a golf club, which was nice actually, like proper little family and I also worked at Next, which wasn't great [laughs]. I'm just really glad to be out of these jobs man. Proper grateful.

Am I right in thinking you started out making drum and bass?
Yeah I did!

Who would you say is your favourite DnB artist?
You know what, you know who really influences me, and I say this now, even with my house music - Netsky. His older like 2009 stuff really influenced me man. I mean some of the sounds that I’m using now, I think you can kinda tell there is some Netsky in there.

I’m sure you guys will cross paths at some point, have you bumped into him on your tour?
Not yet, but I hear he’s a really nice guy, would love to meet him.

I’ve been passed over some random quick-fire questions, are you up for it?
Yeah man let’s do it.

If you could play a famous character in a film, who would play?
Aw man, it’s a bit boring but one of my favourite films is Casino Royale so I would love to play James Bond.

What’s your favourite word that starts with ‘Q’?
My favourite word that starts with Q? [laughs] ummm Queue? [laughs]. What else can you have that starts with Q? Quorn! [laughs].

Are you vegetarian?
Nah I'm not. Passionately not.

What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream?
Mint choc chip, easily. Love that!

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
I’d love to fly, be so much easier to get to shows!

If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be?
Anything? Aw that’s difficult! Urm... I actually don’t know. That's so random. Urm money [laughs]. I dunno [laughs].

Obviously the release next month is what we have to look forward to, but what’s your plan for the rest of the year?
I've been touring loads recently, just want to cut down a little bit as I haven't had that much time to produce and I’m not one for travelling and producing. I’m just never in the mood, plus I don’t have the right facilities. I can understand these artists with private jets and stuff have like a studio on a plane. I'm not saying I want that, I’m just saying when I travel I usually have a crying baby next to me, so it's difficult to concentrate. So yeah, spend a bit more time at home and get some music done.

I bet you have some great experiences from this summer to get out into your new music.
Exactly! I just wanna get back in the studio and get it all down.

Nice one man, well next time you have a London date I’ll be sure to pop down and say hello, good luck with the rest of your year and good luck with the release.
Thanks man, appreciate it!
