'Space is only noise' Nicolas Jaar

House | Wednesday 12th June 2013 | Keshav

In 2011 Nicolas Jaar released his much awaited debut album ‘Space Is Only Noise’. The problem was that the album got lost in all the new music that was happening at the time. No one quite realised that what Jaar was doing was really different and refreshing, that they should stop and appreciate the briliiance that resonates through this effort. Nicolas Jaar is not your ordinary musician, despite being born in New York he spent most of his life living in Chile. If you have ever been to Chile you will know that this serene and encapsulating land quite literally takes your breath away. From its mountains to its lakes and valleys it is one of the hidden gems of South America.

It’s often difficult for an artist for to paint pictures in peoples head but Nicolas Jaar’s album quite vividily will grab you with both hands as he takes you on a journey through this land.  The album is relaxed much like Jaar’s sound.

It begins with the extraordinary ‘Etre’. The listener is greeted by the sound of waves and some French and English spoken monologue. Whether you understand it or not Jaar’s expert ability to transport you to a faraway land is quite extraordinary and clearly visible. You can feel the raindrops dropping on you as you journey through a busy town. If seems Jaar has captured this to provide a unique listening experience.  The next song is ‘Colomb’ once again spoken in French the song can draw comparisons to a prayer because of angelic qualities. ‘ Sunflowers’ is a 34 second kind of interlude turning the chapter and flowing straight into ‘Too many kids finding rain in the dust’ With Jaar having given the listener so much already the song swings with an extraordinary guitar in the background making for easy and pleasurable listening. ‘ Keep me there and Problem with the sun’  are another two tracks which are incredibly powerful.  The album is fascinating yet futuristic. Listen to ‘Almost Fell’ and ‘Space is only noise you can see’ and it feels as though you are floating without gravity in an endless empty space with no boundaries.  Jaar’s pure desire to create something different is what makes this album so good. There is simply not one flaw that can be picked out

The record ends like it began but with ‘tre’ it’s like we have been taken on a journey and bought right back to the start. It’s a journey that touches us , makes us listen and feel. What we lack in touch we make up with in harmony. There is not a way of describing album because its dimension goes deeper it’s takes us into the mind of a young man determined to make his sound as far reaching as possible!
