Discover: Makin Jan Ma

Makin Jan Ma is not only a designer, but an artist, a filmmaker and a visionary. He first came in Great Britain at 19 to study Graphic Design after an unusual childhood in a chicken farm in Hong Kong. Makin discovered fashion and continued his studies with a bachelor's degree at Central St. Martins, earning a first class honours and discovering how to express himself through fashion and art. Through attending the Royal College of Art, Makin jumped into different forms of conceptual media; such as film projects in conjunction with fashion lines. And this is what makes him special; exploring the relationship between fashion and film through continuous evolvement of fictional characters and narratives. Since 2010, each season MJM creates collections inspired by the characters that he invents for his films, an innovative idea that elevates the Chinese designer to artist with full rights.
With a concept store in Shoreditch, Makin Jan Ma became the spokesperson for a very interesting movement of street style that does not stop at mere fashion but also meets the artistic minds of the people. His clothes have a unique visual language, since they express the emotions of the characters that inspired them. Specific ideas and specific individuals. Different styles, and lots of imagination expressed through interesting cuts, drawings and details.In the case of MJM it would be like wearing someone else’s shoes... but isn’t that precisely what fashion does?
