If You Love Music You Will Love Art: The Hand Behind the Covers

Tuesday 16th April 2013 | Williams

We are told not to judge a book by its cover, but we have never been warned against doing so with an album. Cover art is, in fact, a crucial component in the marketing of an artist’s music. Music lovers drawn to the album cover of Tyler, The Creator’s Wolf will be likely to appreciate Mark Ryden’s other works. If you’re not familiar with Tyler, The Creator, then Michael Jackson’s Dangerous will surely ring a bell. Ryden created that album cover too.

Lowbrow artist Ryden, whose Facebook fan page has garnered more that 148,000 likes, has just announced the release of two new books; The Gay 90’s Exhibition and Pinxit Popular Edition are available for purchase and signing as Mark starts his book tour.

Alternative hip-hop artist Tyler, The Creator’s Wolf is deeply personal, and the subliminal message sent within Ryden’s cover work portrays that perfectly. The mountain range depicted in the background is symbolic of Tyler’s affiliation with the West Coast hip-hop movement, and the imagery within the foliage plays upon his personal growth and development as a hip-hop artist. The infant, surreal character in the right hand corner touches upon Tyler’s development.

The Lowbrow art movement was born of underground and street culture, and in many ways was as directly affiliated with the city as hip-hop. If you love this music, you’ll love this art.
