London Travel Plans and The Marathon; After The Boston Bombs
Tuesday 16th April 2013 | Adam
Over a million people line the streets of London each year to watch one of the greatest long distant running events there is; the London Marathon.
Over 30,000 people participated as athletes in the event last year from 40 countries around the world, pushing people of all body shapes and cultures to their absolute physical maximum.
Since 1981 the London Marathon has bought people from all over the UK to our thriving capital. This coming Sunday will be no different, people from all over the British isles and the rest of Europe are expected to gather in our fine city for another spectacle of sporting camaraderie, masterful athleticism and ridiculous home-made costumes.
We have all been looking forward to the annual run; until yesterday. The explosions at the Boston event held yesterday killed three instantly and has left at least 140 seriously injured. Some have undergone amputation and others are left in a continued critical state from blast and shrapnel wounds.
The two explosions sabotaged an otherwise faultless marathon and cities all around the world are now on maximum alert in response to efforts of suspected terrorism from a currently unknown source. Shortly after the event, Barack Obama released ““We will find out who did this; we’ll find out why they did this,” he said. “Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”
Travel plans for thousands are now in jeopardy as most now fear for their safety as the run-up is stunned by the recent State-side tragedy. The tourism London receives from the marathon each year is one of the centerfolds of the cities financial year and is set to be hit by a shock of fear from the Boston bombs.
Speak of even cancelling the London Marathon altogether have spread which left thousand in disarray and confusion.
With that said, decisions have been made to let the race go ahead and the sports minister is 'absolutely confident' the capital will be safe, The Metropolitan police are revising all security measures to ensure the safety of crowds, competitors and the general public.
