Matisyahu comes to Scala tonight!

Tuesday 12th March 2013 | Emily

Reggae legend Matisyahu is touring the UK and will be playing at Scala tonight! Of Jewish origin, and born in the US, Matisyahu's sound combines reggae with hip-hop, dub, and many other strange and wonderful sounds. Known for his very long hair, he controversially cut it all off, and refused to wear his flat cap, this caused a stir amongst the Jewish audience, but he exclaimed, 'No more Chassidic reggae superstar. Sorry folks, all you get is me...no alias.'' Suggesting that the exterior which we present to the world does not matter as much as we give it credit for, our beliefs, our way of life, these are what matter. Anyway, we'll be interviewing him tonight and apparently there will be a special acoustic session in store for us- so keep an eye on GNTV for this special event. He has had four studio albums since 2004, and two live albums, which, considering the amount of records that is released on a day to day basis, he certainly does not write and play only for the money, these are extremely well mixed, beautifully recorded selections. Give his track, 'One Day' a listen below

He has also done several Bob Marley covers, and a cover of The Police's 'Message in a Bottle' so check those out as well!

The lyrics in this track are all related to recent wars that are happening, and that 'one day' people will wake up and realise, or at least try and see that violence is not always the answer. 'Sometimes I lay under the moon and thank God I'm breathing'. His work seems to me to be a positivist outlook on the way that we ought to approach the world, he is aware of the underlying problems and suggests a mindset that will enable us to overcome them.
