Valentino win the Greenpeace's Fashion Duel

Other | Monday 18th February 2013 | Serena

The latest battle for Greenpeace in the war against the fashion industry, started in July 2011 with the project Detox, is the Fashion Duel.

The non-governmental environmental organization is sure that by adopting policies of Zero Deforestation and Zero Discharge of hazardous chemicals, the big brands have the power to make the difference. Therefore they are asking them to guarantee their consumers 'clean products'.

Greenpeace Italy sent a survey kit to 15 top big brands to self investigate their production impact on the earth, and the Italian luxury brand Valentino turns out to be the brand that in its production chain, adopts the highest sustainability measures. It has made a commitment to eliminate all hazardous chemicals from its supply chain and products by 2020, and it has also made commitments with regards to its policies on the procurement of leather, pulp and paper.

Whilst brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Versace are not committed enough to not pollute the water during their production and to not stop deforestation for profit purposes, there are other six big brands that refused to disclose their information, including Chanel, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.

The fashion industry is at the forefront of causes of deforestation and water poisoning, and action like this by global luxury brands, could really change the situation.

In fact not only does the production of clothes pollute the waters in Mexico and China in particular, but in the Amazon millions of hectares of forests are destroyed to make way for cattle, which is then used for the leather goods industry. Also worryingly, the natural habitat of the Sumatran tiger is destroyed to make low-cost packaging, paving the way for its extinction.

This is an invitation from Greenpeace, to a more conscientious consumption of fashion and a production without destruction and pollution. If Valentino can do it then why can't everybody else?
