Black Hippy - The Next NWA?

Tuesday 5th February 2013 | Harry

Black Hippy is an American hip hop supergroup that you probably haven’t even heard of but are destined for great things. Hailing from South Central Los Angeles and signed to Top Dawg, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records, the group consists of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. Interested now?

They may not have even released a full length project yet but the members of the group are all now acclaimed solo artists in their own right which brings a credibility to the band that we haven’t seen in a long time. I don’t want to get carried away but could we have a group that could get compared to anything like a new NWA? Well, the comparisons have already been made by some, but it’s too early to tell. However these guys, whatever happens will not head down the same forlorn route that NWA did because they have done things the other way round. Although the group formed in 2009, each member has solidified their solo career before taking on this project (which is sure to explode). Kendrick Lamar has said that it is because of this reason that the group will never split and it makes a whole load of sense. That and the simple reason these guys are such tight mates. They are all frequent collaborators on each other’s solo work and bounce off each other perfectly in the material. They are so comfortable with one another that a lot of the time don’t even bother with a featuring credit.

All this hype about the group as a whole isn’t totally blind either. They have released a number of tunes which give a taste of things to come like Zip that Chop That, Say Wassup and On Some Other Shit. Listen and see what I mean. We can’t wait for big things to come from Black Hippy and hope they come very soon.
