She & Him Volume 3
Thursday 31st January 2013 | Laura
If you don’t know Zooey Deschanel and you keep asking who’s that girl, maybe you are from another planet. Ok, she’s not Psy, but this girl is getting in everyone’s houses with her successful sitcom New Girl for which she’s been recently nominated for the Golden Globes. Her adorable role of a primary teacher who left her boyfriend and started living with 3 guys is one of everyone’s favorite new shows-in addition to Girls. I really can’t stop laughing every time she opens her mouth or does the smallest gesture, this girl is genuinely hilarious. I personally got to know her for her role in (500) Days of summer, and the first thing I thought when I saw her was: ‘This girl really looks like Katie Perry’, but after a while, I realized that she’s prettier and has a stronger personality than Perry, as she’s original in almost every way.
The crazy cute chic is one of a kind, and if I couldn’t admire her more, I discovered that she has a band, She & Him, which has become my new addiction. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, or She & Him, met on the set of the film The Go-Getter, when the director introduced each other as he wanted them to write a song for the end credits. Short after M. Ward discovered Deschanel’s secret: she loved to sing and had a collection of home demos which she was afraid to share with the world. But for some reason, she sent them to M. Ward, who told her he wanted to record her songs properly, and She & Him was formed. They released two outstanding albums called Volume I and Volume II and they also have A Very She & Him Christmas maybe the title is a tribute to A Very Ally Christmas, from Ally McBeal, or maybe not.
This duo will release next may the 3d Volume, with fourteen songs – 11 Deschanel originals and 3 covers, including a version of ‘Sunday Girl’ from Blondie - which also features contributions from NRBQ’s Joey Spampinato, Mike Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom Hagerman from Devotchka. The band states on their Facebook page that Volume 3 “is an effortlessly effervescent, bleached-out-in-the-sun pop record. The album features some of the most dynamic, complex songs Deschanel has ever written, allowing for tempo shifts, disco grooves, string arrangements on multiple tracks, and horn flourishes that perfectly suit the She & Him sound”. I’ll be expecting it with the same expectation as the new season of one of my favorite shows.
Ps: If you are a fan of Deschanel, you would like to know that she appeared in the video for The Offspring’s ‘She's Got Issues’.
