DJ Matthew Interview

House | Thursday 24th January 2013 | Osh

Ahead of his set for Big Vinyl Circus at Cable on Saturday 26th January, Joe Le Groove had a chat with Mattia Lapucci.

You were born in Italy and now live in Berlin, what made you move to Germany?
I moved to Berlin for Techno/House music, I wanted to express my passion where it would be appreciated, as my life in Italy didn't present many opportunities to do so, the art of djing is not as respected as here in Berlin.

Lorenzo and Ginaluca  from Big Vinyl Circus speak highly about your skills as a DJ when did you first start playing?
When I hear people praise my talents I feel embarrassed, I just do things with my heart and i'm really happy that people appreciate it, especially people like Lorenzo and Gianluca. I played for the first time in a little party organized with my friends in Florence, I was 13 years old and at the time I tried the art of  djing for the first time, without turntables and a  mixer. I remember that i've used two portable cd players and one amplifier.I did the mixing by changing the channels on the amplifiers, I played what I wanted to and  to see all my friends enjoy and dance filled my heart with delight, at that point i decided to get deeper into the art form.

On the production tip what have you been up to?
I haven't released at the moment because i'm really strict with my projects, if I don't get the sound that I have in my mind I don't proceed to finish them, I know that its wrong and a lot of people release stuff which I think isn't ready but I want my music to represent myself and my style. I have some tracks ready to release and I hope that people will enjoy and appreciate them when they come out.

How would you describe your sound  when you play?
I try always to make something different, eclectic and eventful where house and techno music is concerned.

What producers are you currently feeling at the moment?
I'm feeling close to Thomas Melchior for the kind of music he produces.

Who has given you the most inspiration in the music scene
I always try to make  what I feel without copying others, but for sure I get a lot of inspiration from Thomas Melchior, Baby Ford and Zip, they play for me the best club's music.

If there was one thing you could change about the music scene what would it be?

In the clubbing scene for sure the overvaluation of the artists, some djs get too much money to play for what they offer, but sadly thats the way it is. for the music in general for me is all ok, music is a common cultural heritage and is right that there is some commercial, underground, dubstep and techno etc, I appreciate every form of it.

What plans have you got for 2013?
I'm working a lot in studio to get the the sounds that I like, release some EP's and play, play, play!

You are playing @ Big Vinyl Circus on saturday morning 26th January at Cable, what  can the crowd expect from you as the guys want djs to express themselves musically without boundaries?
The crowd can expect different genres of music, surprising them with amazement and I expect a warm crowd that I can transmit  to them all my sensations.

If you were banished to a desert island and had to take 3 famous people with you who would you take and why?
I really don't know, mmmhhhhh… good question. I'll bring with me if is possible out of the famous people, my muse Marta, she is not famous all over the world but is the most famous for me, a comedian, laughing is really important in life, maybe someone like Ben Stiller and two good djs like Thomas Melchior and Zip to play all time ;)
