Depp, Richards and Waits turn pirate for new album

Other | Thursday 6th December 2012 | David

Big names are uniting for a “pirate” compilation. Crack out the rum, this should be good.

Johnny Depp is well known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, and now it seems the enigmatic pirate side of the actor is coming back out – musically this time. He is among a host of famous names included on Son of a Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys, a collection of seafaring songs to be released on Tom Waits’ label Anti Records.

Depp and Waits will be joined by Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Gore Verbinski, Shane McGowan, Michael Stipe, Patti Smith and many others for the album, which features collaborations that could only come from this kind of project. It is the sequel to Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys from 2006, the brainchild of Hal Wilner. The idea was cooked up with Depp and Verbinski on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Wilner was doubtful that it would ever really come to fruition, stating that it was much harder the second time around, but it is now official. Speaking about the album, which supposed to be quite different from the first instalment, Wilner said there would be “not as much about torture, sodomy and death, which will disappoint some but, we don't need to repeat ourselves do we?”

Son of a Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys is due to be released in February. Load up on pirate hats and grog – this has the potential to be fantastic.
