Delphic @ Village Underground
Tuesday 13th November 2012 | Scott
Delphic took to the stage at Shoreditch’s fabulously ghetto chic Village Underground last Thursday night for their first London show since 2010 (it has been FAR too long, but we’ll get to that).
Supported by the aptly named D/R/U/G/S (though I missed his set), the Mancunian trio gave the lucky crowd an exciting taste of what’s to come from their upcoming album Collections, the trailer for which (below) had been released earlier in the day.
Dressed as immaculately as ever, the boys opened with London 2012 track Good Life before launching into Acolyte favourites Halycon, This Momentary, Clarion Call and Red Lights- triggering memories of night time drives and pangs of 2010 nostalgia.
It took a while for the London crowd to warm up (planting thoughts in my head of a move to Manchester), and it was left up to myself and another solitary Australian guy to ensure there was some body movement going on front of stage, but we eventually got there with Doubt seeming to get people in tha mood.
New offerings were worked in in trademark Delphic mixing style amidst the tracks that made the band so special when they first emerged onto the scene.
The new material sounded good (especially one track, the name of which I have no idea. It’s the first track on the album trailer, anyway) and, importantly, it didn’t replicate the formula that made Acolyte so amazing.
Joined by drummer Dan Hanley and new bassist Stu Coleman, James, Rick and Matt offered up a different, more drum focussed sound on stage that lent itself to moments of hip-hop style head nodding (read ‘getting crunk’) rather than raving/eyes-closed-standing-perfectly-still moments induced by synthesised excellence.
The hip-hop/R&B influences were refreshing and, paired with the input of the ever-talented Tim Goldsworthy, make the impending release of Collections, which is pencilled in for January 28, even more exciting (if that were possible).
At least there’s going to be one good thing to come out of the cold and dark of January!
You can read what Delphic have to say about Collections on their Tumblr here:

A really nice read and, while fans have certainly missed seeing the boys live in the years they’ve been absent, it’s all completely worthwhile for they are happy with and proud of what they have produced with their forthcoming album and it makes Collections and Delphic’s return even more special.
Thanks guys. It’s great to have you back =)
