The Great Gatsby is set to be one of the most extravagant and accomplished films of 2013. The film is an adaptation of the classic 1925 novel by F.Scott Fitzgerald depicting the decadent roaring twenties. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo and Juliet) and starring some of the biggest talents of the moment, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, Great Gatsby is destined to be spectacular.
Miuccia Prada, who also designed Romeo’s unforgettable powder blue suit in Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet, has collaborated with head of costume Catherine Martin (Luhrmann’s wife) to create forty beautiful twenties style dresses for the film. The designer used gowns from the Prada and Miu Miu collection as a starting point. When speaking with Vogue Prada explained, “I usually try not to literally reference periods in my work, because that's not the way I think. But when I worked on the costumes, I realised how many pieces could become very 1920s with a little intervention and another point of view.”
The Great Gatsby was originally due to premiere this December, but has been pushed back and is now set for release in May 2013. Disheartening, but news of this incredible collaboration is more than enough to get us through the winter months and keep us in a perpetual state of anticipation.
