James Spankie plays at Lock Tavern this Thursday
Wednesday 3rd October 2012 | Rebecca
Wednesday, October, rain - it’s all a bit grim burton. It’s as if on my morning train ride my itunes understood my autumnal blues as Adele and Damien Rice shuffled their way into my wind chapped ears.
We’re all about good vibes and positive things here at Guestlist, but sometimes it’s a Wednesday and you just need a baggy jumper, a bowl of soup and a song to cry into your cold cup of tea over. Well I bring you James Spankie - already you’re laughing. Not all of his music is sad but it does seem to have an overlying elevated, air grabbing sense of inner turmoil. I’m not really selling him, am I?
The music is beautiful, like an epic lullaby. Spankie is undoubtedly musically talented - in one music video alone you see him layer a track playing three different instruments, one by one, to build his own backing band. No, he won’t lift your spirits out of the leafy gutter, but his emotive lyrics and outstanding instrumentals might just make it impossible to fight the urge to grab the nearest cushion and squeeze it to within an inch of its life.
This Thursday, James Spankie will be bringing his harmonious loveliness to the Lock Tavern in Camden for a free gig. The Young and Lost club, will also play host to Jade Hopcroft, Ottila and Benjamin R. Trante, all bringing their own indie-folk feel. A glass of whisky, a storm outside and a broken heart, are the perfect accompaniment for these soulful sounds this Thursday at eight. Now I don’t advice going to this gig if you have been recently bereaved or perhaps had one to many gin and tonics and find yourself, to quote Ron Burgandy, “trapped in a glass case of emotion”, but if you do want to listen to some truly beautiful sounds from a very talented and honest artist then this cheekily named act is for you.
I advise packing waterproof mascara and a box of Kleenex, things might get a bit teary.
