The follow up to 2009 album Sigh No More by the London folk-rock band, has become the fastest selling album of this year.
New album Babel has gone straight into the number one slot in the UK album charts after recording sales of 159,000 copies in the previous week according to the Official Charts Company.
The band has beaten the previous record held by Lana del Rey’s Born to Die which sold almost 117,000 copies in its first week, and have also recently announced huge tours of both the UK and Ireland for November and December this year.
The new album looks to continue from the success of the debut album which saw the quartet rise to prominence in recent years and despite already racking up impressive album sales, Babel has a long way to go if it is to receive the same level of critical acclamation of the debut, which saw the band nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2010 and win a Brit for Best British Album in 2011.
The news see’s the latest indie act to reach the top spot in the chart in what seems a brief resurgence in indie success after The xx, The Killers and The Vaccines all achieved the highest chart position in the UK.
